Install Agent Remote

Two apps: one on the computer your agents run on, one on your phone. Ten minutes, and the second half needs both in front of you.

Desktop version 0.7.37.

On your computer

The app sits beside your agents and keeps your sessions running. Pick your operating system — the steps differ, because what each one needs differs.

  1. Open the file you downloaded

A window opens with the app and a shortcut to your Applications folder. Drag the app onto it.
  2. Open it, and confirm once

macOS asks whether you are sure the first time you open anything downloaded from the web. If it refuses instead of asking, right-click the app and choose Open — or go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway.
  3. Let it start its background service

The app offers on first launch. That service is what keeps a session alive when you close the window, and it starts again when you log in.

  1. Install the package

For Debian or Ubuntu: sudo apt install ./agent-remote_*.deb.
  2. Let it start its background service

It runs as a systemd user service, so it comes back when you log in, and stops when you quit the app.

Windows

The Windows app is coming soon. Until then, Agent Remote runs on Windows 10 and 11 inside WSL, the Linux that Windows can run alongside it: you install it with one line, then use it from your phone.

Windows 10 and 11

The desktop app.

Use it on Windows today

  1. Install WSL

In PowerShell as administrator: wsl --install, then restart Windows. It sets up Ubuntu; open it from the Start menu and choose a user name and password when it asks.
  2. Run this line in Ubuntu

It installs for your user only and ends with a short guide.
    curl -fsSL https://agentremote.app/api/download/install.sh | sh
  3. Start it, then pair

Run agent-remote start, then agent-remote pair and scan the code with the phone app. Run the install line again later to update; your phone stays paired.
  4. On your home network, Windows 11

To pair without an account, turn on mirrored networking in the WSL Settings app and allow it through the firewall when Windows asks. With an account, link it (the last step under the server instructions below) to reach it from anywhere.

No screen on that machine? Linux servers and Windows (WSL)

For a machine you reach over SSH, or Ubuntu inside WSL on Windows. It installs for your user only: no sudo, and nothing else to install first.

curl -fsSL https://agentremote.app/api/download/install.sh | sh
  1. Run that one line in the machine's terminal

It picks the build for your processor, checks it before unpacking, and ends with a short guide. Run the line again later to update; your phone stays paired.
  2. Start it, then pair

Run agent-remote start, then agent-remote pair and scan the code it shows with the phone app, the same as a desktop computer.
  3. On Windows, run it inside WSL

In PowerShell: wsl --install, restart, open Ubuntu, then run the line above there. To pair over your home network on Windows 11, turn on mirrored networking in the WSL Settings app and allow it through the firewall when Windows asks.
  4. Optional: link it to your account

Run agent-remote cloud login https://cloud.agentremote.app and enter the code it shows at cloud.agentremote.app/link while signed in.

Rather install by hand? Download the file for your processor and check its SHA-256 against the one shown before you unpack it.

Installing the Android download

This file is for Android phones and tablets without Google Play. It comes straight from us, so Google Play won't update it: for a newer version, come back to this page and download it again. If you already have Agent Remote from Google Play, keep that one — Google Play keeps it up to date for you.

Installed the Android download before version 1.0.12? Uninstall it once first.

Android won't install this file over the earlier one, or over the Google Play app, and says App not installed. Press and hold Agent Remote's icon, choose Uninstall, then install this one. You only need to do this once.

Uninstalling removes what the app keeps on the phone: the computers you paired and your sign-in. Your sessions keep running on your computers. Afterwards, sign in again and pair each computer again (step 3 below). More on App not installed

  1. Open the file you downloaded

Tap it in the notification when the download finishes, or find it in your Downloads.
  2. Allow installs from your browser when Android asks

Android asks the first time a browser installs an app. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source (Install unknown apps), then go back.
  3. Tap Install

When it finishes, tap Open. You can turn the browser setting off again afterwards.
  1. On iPhone or iPad, install it from the App Store

Search for Agent Remote, or use the button above.
  2. Allow notifications when it asks

That is how the phone can tell you an agent is waiting — tap one to open the session and answer. You can change it later in Settings.
3

Pair the two

  1. Show the pairing code on the computer

Open the app on your computer, go to Access and choose Generate pairing QR. A QR code appears.
  2. Scan it with the phone app

Tap the QR icon at the top, or + beside your computers and then Scan pairing code, and point the camera at the code. The phone gets its own key; nothing is shared between devices.
  3. Start a session

Pick a folder and an agent on either app. You are on your own network at this point, which is everything the free plan covers.
  4. To reach it from anywhere, link the computer to your account

In the app's Cloud tab, sign in and link this computer. That is what the Pro trial adds, along with notifications and more devices.

That is everything to install. For sessions, presets, notifications and what to do when something goes wrong, read the docs.

If the phone can't reach the computer

On your own network the phone connects to the computer on port 38787. A firewall that blocks incoming connections stops it, and the phone says “Your computer didn't answer”. Let it through once:

macOS

If the Mac asks whether Agent Remote may accept incoming network connections, choose Allow. If you chose Deny, open System Settings, then Network, then Firewall, choose Options, and set Agent Remote to allow incoming connections.

Linux

Check whether the firewall is on with sudo ufw status. If it says active, allow the port:

sudo ufw allow 38787/tcp

With firewalld (Fedora and others) instead:

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=38787/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

The same goes for a server without a screen.

Windows (WSL)

Turn on mirrored networking in the WSL Settings app, as in the steps above, and allow it through the firewall when Windows asks. Then run agent-remote doctor in Ubuntu: it says whether your phone can reach it.

Not the firewall? A guest network, a VPN or a virtual machine can get in the way too — the docs go through each, and how to check from your phone's browser.

Creating an account is only needed for the parts that reach your computer from outside your network.
